Trust Deed

Bishop Siwa reported that the Trust Deed was registered with the Master of the Supreme Court on the 29th July 2004 in Grahamstown.

Healdtown Blazer Crest

Dr. Madikiza's initiative for the blazer crest (eagle) is well underway. A template is now being created and will be ready for our review within a few days. 

No School Closing in March

It was announced that schools would not be closed in the month of March as would have been customary in order to boost academic study and performance. 

Extra Classes on Saturdays

Extra classes will be held on Saturdays as one of the means to improve academic results.

 

Motivational Speakes on Fridays

On Fridays there will be motivational speakers.

Teacher Objectives

Each staff member (teacher) to provide highlights of his/her objectives.

Mr. Jabavu to Lobby for a Museum at Healdtown

Mr.Jabavu, a descendant of the illustrious Jabavu family, will head a lobby to establish a museaum at Healdtown.

 

Healdtown College Foundation Board Of Trustees Meeting

 The Board met on Saturday, 27 March 2004 at the Ecdc, Quigney, East London

The meeting was attended by Bishop Z. Siwa, Mesd Nomabhele Didiza, Nomonde Hlatshaneni, Kitten Matthews, Fungiwe Nkwinti, Orie Pule and Sweetness Sonqai; Messrs P.Sigila, F. Kalp, Z. Mankazana, M Fundam S. Jabavu, The Nkonkobe Municipalitiy Mayor- Mr H.M. Mdleleni,  Professor H. Thipa, Adv. D. Kumalo, Rev- Dr.TSN Gqubule and Rev. DDM Songelwa

Among issues discussed were:

  1. Preparations for Healdtown’s 150th Anniversary. Invitations to be sent out by the end of June.
  2. Matriculation academic results for the years 1999 to 2003.
  3. Staff qualifications at Healdtown.
  4. Registration of a Trust Deed.
  5. Fundraising in the US by Mr. Mankazana and Ms. Mathews.
  6. The resurfacing of the road to Healdtown.

 

 

Updates March 2004

Swedish Visitors to Healdtown

q      A Swedish delegation visited Healdtown along with the Department of Education officials. This visit resulted in Healdtown being identified with two other rural schools for capacity building support in a special education project.

 

Healdtown Becomes Hearitage Site

q      Healdtown has been identified as a heritage site by the Department of Arts and Culture. This effectively adds Healdown to the tourist-trail.

 

Fort Beaufort Healdtown Road

q      Upgrading plans for the road between Fort Beaufort and Healdtown have now been officially adopted by the Nkonkobe Municipality in Fort Beaufort.

 

Rev. Songelwa's Initiatives

q      Plaudits to the Rev. Martin Songelwa for his initiative to have the Healdtown community prepare commemorative wreaths to be placed at the grave sites of the Healdtown founding Patriachs such as the Reverend John Ayliff who is buried at Tyatyora.

 

Municipality Promises Road Upgrades

q       The Municipality of Fort Beaufort has promised to upgrade the road between Fort Beaufort and Healdtown.  

 

Australia Donates Books

q       Australian donors have provided Business Economics books.

 

Adult Education Started

q       ABET  (Adult Basic Education Programme) has started with 48 learners.

 

 African Life Promises Funding

q       African Life representatives have promised to fund an entrepreneurship programme. Further Training will start in 2006.

 

Grade School Pupils to be Housed

q       Grades 4-12 will be housed at Healdtown.

 

Matric Results

Updates 2003

q       The high school was re-opened in 1994 as a day school. The students all reside in the neighboring villages.

q       An architectural firm has been retained and is now in the process of determining the extent of damage to the school buildings in order to recommend a course of action. There are some buildings that can be rehabilitated while one or two others may have to be demolished and reconstructed.

q       A media center/library has been established

q       Given the historical importance of Healdtown, a tour program is being developed.

q       Improvements on the infrastructure will require the installation of a reliable system for the delivery of clean water and an effective method for waste disposal.

q       Dr. Toto Mbethe has donated automobile stickers to be sold to alumni and friends of Healdtown.

q      There are ongoing meetings with representatives from the ECDC (Eastern Cape Development Corporation).

q      Plans are afoot to meet with the MEC for Arts and Culture in the Eastern Cape.

 

q      The Healdtown residential community is well underway with an agricultural project to grow paprika for extensive marketing.

q      An electric fence has now been installed around the entire school property to deter vandalism.

q      The Architectectural firm Winterbach Pretorius Letele Inc has been retained

 

q      The firm of Quantity Surveyors is Roeleveld Quantity Surveyors CC.

q      The current estimates for the reconstruction program are $5.5M USD.

q      Dr. Phakamile Madikiza has undertaken to reproduce the Healdtown blazer crest. The process is quite intricate and costly. He is expecting the first proofs for approval shortly. Stay tuned for updates.
